as a fashion student of sorts twice a year ever year the consensus is to lend a hand in london fashion week. this fall 

lucky enough to dress for both the unconditional show as well as richard nicoll; richard nicoll the more striking of the two.
inspired by androgyne, david bowie & soundtrack by bowie the show commenced at nightfall. projected in the glass 

roofing of the old eurostar building at waterloo, the performance completely sublime.

bones are made in the womb

as a creative there is a natural appreciation for a range of disciplines & methods of production. of late collage seems to 

be a particularly prominent outlet for my own artistry. on occasion it may seem to be a cheat, with no specific need to put 

pen paint or otherwise to paper. however the ability to create not just a seamless image but a convincing concept ought 

not to be underestimated.

in the same way that collage may cheat practical skill, art college can easily cheat the academic mind. this time two years 

ago the question 'when does science become art??' arose; since an interest in anatomical illustration has developed. above 

the work of richard russell & below that of wangechi mutu. determined to remain connected & interested in traditional 

academics, both artists & their surreal collages appeal to this need providing the perfect fusion of art, science & anthropology.

way back when in november of double-o-nine at the very beginnings of this blog, a sudden statement was made referring to a fresh interest in film & its production. since, the original interest has been furthered with thanks to a lynch based project, the prospective opportunity to create during our next semester along with a wider viewing of general & international video: film, music, performance inc. skate&blade.
sixteen minutes of transfixion followed todays discovery of above film un chien andalou. two personal artworld favourites dadaism & surrealism ignite an interest in greats such as salvador dali & his captivating train of thought. un chien andalou a collaboration between spanish director luis bunuel & dali himself. produced in france during the avant-garde movement of the late nineteen twenties & thereafter both men lived as accepted figures within the surrealist art movement also of that time. the picture later accompanying music by both bowie & the pixies.
with most image there is an expectation to analyse & indeed over anaylse yet a certain sense of relief is attached to said motion picture in the knowledge that "nothing, in the film, symbolises anything. the only method of investigation of the symbols would be, perhaps, psychoanalysis"-bunuel. the irrational nature & narrative of the film lending itself to dream logic & free association; could any mysterious dream of yours or mine ever compare??


finally whilst considering the qualities of surreal imagery there's a great urge to transfer dali's seven nudes skull into a newfangled piece of body art.

recently feeling a great lose of faith in humanity the older & wiser shared some words on stoicism & shed some light on experiences yet to be fathomed. the primary thought having been that surely benevolence must exist for the word to be legitimately used & understood?? 
posted bedside are the verses of rudyard kipling; listed sideways for reading whilst dreaming. not necessarily a guide to life but hopefully truth without tale. read & appreciated in complete contrast to the current & encircling hype.
the layout a first attempt at typewriting. though somewhat generic the skill remains useful. initially structured by the want for perfection, but that soon to be exchanged for a far more personal production. alignment occurring in verse two along with the discovery of grammatical symbols. enjoying the progress throughout before the final verse prevails. though this is not my desk & this is not my typewriter, there is hope that my time will be shared once more.

a friend of mine launched a modelling agency in mayfair club jalouse, suited & booted myself & four attended champagne & sushi at hand. a night in which everything was outside of any usual student haunt.

university peers entered a competition in association with river island. their fashion show held at epsom racecourse, styled by alexis knox & sponsored by vitamin water. lending a hand in dressing models allowed an insider view as the event & its atmosphere unfolded, overall a grand sight for all.

additionally enjoying the opportunity to assist a tutor in their work, a brick lane stall was manned. the 'illustrators special' rummage sale hosting a variety of london based artist each from their own studios & pools of creativity. garudio studiage being that of said tutor.

in return invitations were dealt. predominantly an evening spent at the future gallery to attend the launch of the live issue an up & coming interactive magazine. guests included the faces seen the previous day showing their own work at somerset house's graphics exhibition pick me up. a personal brush with pam hogg & a photographic shot of her sultry sandwich eating saw her metaphorically bite as harshly has she did her ham. the evidence stands below.

the most recent attended again at the future gallery, courvoisier sponsored futuretense. entered through some luck with the excuse 'vice sent...' two attended twice. the first night an intense buyers evening the second a free flowing reception party. futuretense opening an art exhibition formed of work supporting artists expressing themselves without having gone through the traditional art college route. a favourite of mine being joseph loughborough; an artist from portsmouth now producing a number of mainly charcoal works in his hackney wick studio east london.

in spite of all these events the note that stuck amongst all the glory was that from a drunk & spitting gallery owner stating that all we are doing is bullshit. find your own & go it alone. in response forgetting the point of fashion & losing the ability to argue back; what's more the most content observed that evening truly was none other than a tube tramp & his exhausted viola. fashion the facade for all.

a recent obsession with products of scandinavian descent led me to london's well hidden parasol unit. deep within lay a 360 cinema, screening the works of finnish film & video artist eija-liisa ahtila. despite the scene of pitch black & the obvious language barrier the imagery & its meaning were far from lost in translation. the drama intense and the atmosphere evocative of life outside of our own knowledge.

additionally the designs of csm MA graduate laura mackness have been placed in collaboration with swedish label weekday. the palette pure, neutral & effeminate; the design simple at a glance, individual at two. reflective of stereotypical thoughts on scandinavian lifestyle. there is no doubt of the influence on my own current sense of style.

finally, though geographically dissimilar from the two previous, amsterdam based joost vandebrug presents a combination of european film & tonal cleanliness. the filmmaker & photographer working with light, focus & suitable lens, presenting the theme of youthful living in an admirable light whilst honoring the potential of contemporary fashion.

resurrection

jesus died & rose again within one extended weekend. since the easter period a constant train of thought has been running beneath the bridge of the brow. due to a series of minor frustrations & a particularly busy schedule of late, online documentation has been put to one side.
